For the first time, ISOCARP’s annual congress was held online, with the physical congress due to be held in Doha, Qatar deferred to November 2021. With an overarching theme of The Post Oil City – Planning for Urban Green Deals, the congress had several tracks, with Tapestry Director Liz Reynolds co-chairing track 4: Safeguarding Urban Resilience. With the ongoing threat of climate change coupled with the fall-out from COVID-19, discussions around urban resilience felt especially critical this year. COVID-19 has compounded underlying vulnerabilities and therefore lifting communities out of risk needs holistic, long term approaches to improving quality of life. We heard of ‘wonderful resilience’, with solutions that move beyond the technical to bridge governance and social gaps (The Netherlands). See our summary of the track presentations here.
